What Are Dental Implants?
As the most superior form of tooth replacement available, dental implants restore not only the visible portions of missing teeth but also their roots. When placed within the jawbone, the screw-like posts fuse with the surrounding tissues to create a stable base that fully supports the custom-crafted dental restoration (i.e., crown, bridge, or denture). You can expect them to last at least 30 years, allowing you to enjoy a better quality of life.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
- Initial Dental Implant Consultation – Dr. Butler will meet with you for a scheduled consultation to discuss what you hope to achieve with dental implants. After examining your smile and discussing your overall health history, he will evaluate the density of your jawbone and decide if you need further treatment before undergoing dental implant surgery.
- Dental Implant Surgery – The surgeon can perform the dental implant procedure by administering local anesthesia before inserting the implants into the jawbone at the appropriate locations. From there, he will close the gum tissue and place protective healing caps over the posts.
- Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – You will spend time at home recovering from your surgery but should be able to resume normal activity within a few days. The osseointegration process, however, will take 4-6 months, as it takes time for your implants to fuse with the jawbone. This will require you to follow specific aftercare instructions to avoid complications. Once you’re fully healed, you will receive your metal abutments, which will be attached to the tops of your implants so that your restoration, when placed, remains secure.
- Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – The last step of the dental implant process is to receive your newly designed restoration. No matter if it’s a dental crown, bridge, or denture that you need, we will make sure that it looks natural and fits comfortably when put into place. Once we are satisfied, you can begin to enjoy the endless benefits these prosthetics provide.
Benefits of Dental Implants
It is impossible to match the benefits that come with dental implants. Traditional dentures and dental bridges may provide improved confidence because of the way they mimic the look of a natural smile, but dental implants are the only tooth replacement solution that go beneath the gumline to also restore the roots of missing teeth. Also, they deliver a much stronger bite force so there are little to no food restrictions, continue to stimulate the jawbone to prevent future tooth loss, and can last a lifetime as long as you commit to practicing optimal oral hygiene.
