What Happens During a Root Canal?

There are several steps Dr. Butler must follow to ensure the success of your root canal treatment. They include:

  • Administering local anesthesia to numb your mouth and make sure you feel no pain.
  • Isolating the tooth with a dental dam so that moisture doesn’t reach the affected area.
  • Creating a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp and inner layers.
  • Using specialized instruments to clean the interior of the tooth, its canals, and remove the infected pulp.
  • Sterilizing the tooth so that no bacteria remain.
  • Filling the tooth with biocompatible gutta-percha, which gives the tooth stability and replaces the former pulp.
  • Sealing the tooth to prevent reinfection.
  • Preparing a customized dental crown that will fit over the vulnerable tooth and ensure optimal protection.
