Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a deep-cleaning procedure that is performed when advanced gum disease (periodontitis) is present. Generally, gum pockets form, making it easier for bacteria to reach the roots of teeth and underlying bone. To prevent further damage, we can remove plaque and tartar from teeth and gums through scaling before reshaping and smoothing out the roots of teeth as part of root planing. This process encourages gums to heal and reattach over time.
